About This Ministry

This ministry is focused on young people ages 5 through 13.  The basic teachings of the Catholic faith are provided in each level, through a basic catechesis on the Sunday Gospels.  Appropriate for each age level, provided is catechetical references, exercises and activities based on the words of Jesus Christ and on his Gospel as celebrated weekly in the Sunday assembly.

For First Eucharist the lessons invite the youth to:

  • Recognize Eucharist as a sacrament of initiation
  • Explore how the Christian community remembers and celebrates Jesus in its liturgy
  • Dramatize the Gospel stories of Jesus feeding multitudes and eating a last supper with his friends
  • Make connections between family meals and Eucharistic meals
  • Do hands-on activities that involve them concretely in doctrinal concepts
  • Pray with other children
  • Work with parents at home on parallel themes and activities

For First Reconciliation the lessons focus on biblical stories as the source of Christian life:

  • Jesus’ story of the Good Samaritan
  • The ten Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount
  • Jesus’ parable of the prodigal son and the merciful father
  • His parable of the unforgiving servant
  • Jesus’ Easter gift of peace and forgiveness to his first disciples

In 2015 Bishop Silva promulgated that our diocese would celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation in their original order (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist) and Confirmation at the age of reason, which is around 7 years old. After much consultation with many people in the diocese, we would like to offer our young people the gift of the Holy Spirit that is given in a special way in the sacrament of Confirmation, as they grow up, not when they are nearly done growing up. In fact, the order of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Communion had been in place for almost 1900 of the Church’s 2000 year history, so this is a restoration of what is actually the norm in all the official liturgical books. In order to implement this process each parish must have a comprehensive Family Faith Formation and Youth Ministry Program in place so that children and families return after receiving the sacraments for ongoing faith formation. St. Theresa’s policy is that all new students must be registered in Family Faith Formation and/or Youth Ministry for one full year so that they can build a relationship with Jesus and his community. The following year they will prepare for the Sacraments.

RE Teachers are all active parishioners who gain significantly by guiding our youth at this vulnerable age.
